What are braces?

Dental braces are orthodontic devices that correct common oral problems, such as overcrowding, crooked teeth, and misaligned jaws. Most people get braces when they’re children or adolescents, but adults can benefit as well. 

Braces feature three components: brackets, wires, and rubber bands. These materials work in coordination, placing slight pressure on your teeth and jaws. Over time, this pressure aligns your teeth, ensuring you achieve a straight, balanced, and symmetrical smile.

Are there different types of braces?

There are several types of braces, including:

Traditional braces

Traditional braces feature metal brackets that your Safari Dental provider bonds to the front of your teeth. An archwire runs through each bracket and puts pressure on your teeth and jawline. The rubber bands connect the brackets to the archwire, ensuring uniform treatment.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces. The only difference is that your provider bonds them to the back of your teeth instead of the front. Lingual braces are discreet, but they’re also more difficult to access and clean.

Clear braces

If you don’t want to wear traditional metal braces, you might benefit from ceramic or clear braces. Ceramic braces feature ceramic brackets and white wires. This ensures your braces blend in with your tooth enamel. 

Invisalign® aligners

If you have mild or moderate orthodontic issues and you’re a busy professional, consider Invisalign aligners. Invisalign isn’t a type of braces, per se. Instead, it uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually straighten and align your teeth. 

Am I a good candidate for braces?

The best way to determine if you’re a candidate for braces is to schedule a free consultation at Safari Dental. During your initial appointment, your provider conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about your treatment goals.

Your provider then takes casts of your teeth, orders a series of X-rays, and takes photographs. After gathering all of this information, your provider can make recommendations that align with your needs. 

How long does orthodontic treatment with braces take?

The length of time that you’ll need to wear braces depends on your goals for treatment and the severity of your oral misalignments. Most patients finish orthodontic treatment in 12-18 months, but in some cases, it takes longer.
