Veneers Q&A
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin, custom-crafted shells of porcelain or composite resin that your Safari Dental provider bonds to the front of your permanent teeth. They can address a variety of cosmetic imperfections, including chips, discoloration, smaller-than-average teeth, and gaps or spaces.
Some people only get one or two veneers. However, the team at Safari Dental usually recommends six or eight. This ensures you achieve a balanced, symmetrical smile.
Am I a good candidate for veneers?
Only a qualified dentist, like those at Safari Dental, can determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers. During your initial consultation, your provider conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and takes X-rays of your teeth to evaluate their health.
Your provider reviews your X-rays to look for signs of tooth decay and gum disease. If you have either of these problems, you may not qualify for veneers. If you have crooked teeth, your provider might recommend undergoing orthodontic treatment before moving forward.
If your teeth are in good shape, but you’re unhappy with their appearance, you’re probably a good candidate for veneers.
What is the process of getting veneers?
Getting veneers takes two separate appointments. If your Safari Dental provider determines you’re a good candidate, they administer a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums.
Once the anesthesia sets in, your provider prepares your teeth to receive the veneers. They carefully shave a layer of enamel -- about half a millimeter thick -- from the front of each tooth. Next, your provider takes molds of your teeth. They send your molds to a dental laboratory that manufactures your custom veneers.
A week or two later, you return to Safari Dental. At your second appointment, your provider lines up your veneers with your permanent teeth and carefully bonds them in place. You leave the office with a brilliant, healthy smile.
How do I prevent damage to my veneers?
You care for your dental veneers like you would your regular teeth. To keep them in good shape, brush twice a day, floss once a day, and visit Safari Dental every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.
To prevent damage to your veneers, make sure to avoid bad habits like chewing on ice cubes or biting your fingernails. If you play contact sports or enjoy biking or skateboarding, you should also wear a protective mouthguard.
